The Roman deity Venus, borrowed from her Greek counterpart Aphrodite, is associated with love, beauty, art, sex, and fertility. Equally enthralling, in my estimation, are the Paleolithic European nude female figurines, depicted with exaggerated characteristics like large breasts and bellies, which are believed to be early fertility or mother-goddess emblems. These figurines, such as one named “Venus of Willendorf,” actually predate the goddess Venus by many thousands of years. Part of what I love about them is their celebration of the natural female body, and its ample proportions - something to be celebrated rather than shamed.
This pendant is my abstract homage to Venus of Willendorf and other Paleolithic figurines, as a celebration of the abundance provided by the female body
Hand carved and cast using traditional lost-wax casting techniques
